How Charleston Congregation Youth Raised $2,750 for Foster Care Welcome Kits

Sometimes, the most powerful examples of leadership come from children. That truth shines brightly in the story of the Charleston congregation youth group, assisted by Élise Barlow, Primary President of the Charleston congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A Project Inspired by Service

Earlier this year, Élise encouraged the children in her group (ages 8-11) to think about how they could serve others in their community. This story began when the Charleston congregation was searching for ways to serve their community. They found inspiration on Just Serve, a platform that connects volunteers with service opportunities. From there, the kids decided their hearts were in supporting other children, and they chose to serve children experiencing foster care. Their plan: create welcome kits for foster youth filled with essentials and encouragement.

Turning Ideas into Action

Once the project idea was set, the kids realized they needed funding. Together, they came up with the idea of hosting a community service fundraiser. Each child took on a role: some designed fliers, others worked on a budget, and a few scouted possible locations. They even made handmade signs to promote the event around the neighborhood.

When the big day came, their creativity shone. The children sold snow cones, lemonade, baked goods, handmade bracelets, face painting, painted garden rocks, and more. They chose Flag Day for their sale and even incorporated themed items to draw in neighbors. By the end of the event, the group had raised over $2,750, exceeding their original goal.

Building Something Together

The fundraising was only the beginning. Next, the kids went shopping (online, as a group) for items to fill the welcome kits. They carefully selected toiletries, small comfort items, and supplies that would help make a difficult transition a little easier. Wanting to add a personal touch, they also decided to write handwritten notes of encouragement to tuck inside each kit.

Élise described the experience as more than just a project: “It has been such a cool experience bringing the community together and serving. A little child shall lead the way!”

The Impact

The result was 100 welcome kits for foster care youth. These kits will serve as a tangible reminder that children and families in their own community care deeply about them.

For the Charleston congregation’s youth, the project was about more than money or materials. It showed them the power of teamwork, creativity, and compassion. It also inspired their congregation and neighbors, many of whom were deeply moved to see young children lead such a meaningful effort.

By the Numbers

  • $2,750+ raised at a single youth-led community fundraiser
  • 100 welcome kits created for youth entering foster care
  • Countless hours of teamwork, planning, and service

At Raise the Future, we are honored to spotlight these children and their incredible example of service. Their story reminds us that change can start with even the smallest voices, and that those voices can inspire an entire community.
