The Power of Connection 

For Brian Knudsen, serving on the Raise the Future Board of Directors is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: one meaningful connection can change the course of a life. Through his public service, his role as a father, and his commitment to strengthening the community, Brian has seen firsthand how being seen, heard, and valued can make all the difference. His passion for helping children and families build lasting relationships continues to shape both his work and his service to Raise the Future.

Tell us a little about yourself. What should our supporters know about your professional background and your journey into public service?

I have the privilege of serving our community as an elected official, where I work with people from all walks of life. No matter the issue, I try to establish shared values and truly understand what people need from their interactions with me. Through deep listening, I've found that most people are working toward the same goal: to be seen, heard, and valued.

What inspired you to join the Raise the Future Board of Directors, and what about our mission resonates most with you?

I originally joined the board because I was inspired by the staff, and that inspiration continues today. I love surrounding myself with people who are passionate about making the world a better place. The mission of Raise the Future keeps me centered and reminds me that our role is to create meaningful connections that improve lives and last a lifetime.

How has serving on the Raise the Future Board influenced you personally?

One of the most meaningful experiences I've had came from a conversation with a Raise staff member in Nevada. During a lunch meeting, she shared TBRI® principles that helped me better understand the mindset of my six-year-old son. That conversation changed my relationship with him and made me a better parent.

That same son recently organized and supported a fundraiser for Raise the Future. He gave speeches, participated in television interviews, and played the saxophone because he felt connected to children who are still waiting to find their forever families. Watching him develop that compassion has been incredibly rewarding.

Why do you believe community involvement is so important for youth experiencing foster care?

As adults, we all have an opportunity to make a difference. You never know which conversation or act of kindness will change how someone sees themselves or the world around them. The simplest words can inspire someone to believe in themselves, and there is no better feeling than helping someone realize their worth.

Is there a moment that has stayed with you during your time with Raise the Future?

One experience I'll never forget was touring Child Haven with members of the Raise Board. We saw a row of young children aged 1 to 3 years, sitting in high chairs being fed. It was heartbreaking and reinforced why this work matters.

Our responsibility is to help ensure those children move beyond those early experiences and grow up knowing connection, belonging, and love. As board members, our role is to support the incredible staff, so they have the resources they need to help children and families build those lifelong relationships.
