About TBRI®

Raise the Future has embraced the Trust-Based Relational Intervention® model, developed by Texas Christian University, to connect with all caregivers, children, employees, and the professionals who engage in our services.

About TBRI® at Raise the Future

What is TBRI®?

Trust Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is an evidence-based parenting and intervention model developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at Texas Christian University (TCU). TBRI® has been built on a solid foundation of neuropsychological theory and research, tempered by humanitarian principles. It is a family-based intervention, designed for children who have experienced relationship-based traumas such as institutionalization, multiple foster placements, maltreatment, abuse, and/or neglect.

Our Staff + the model

Our training staff have studied under Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross and their team at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at Texas Christian University (TCU). Our training staff are accredited by TCU as TBRI® Practitioners. Training courses utilize the TBRI® curriculum developed by KPICD. Raise the Future is partnered with KPICD to provide TBRI® to families and professionals in the states we serve. The full TBRI® series constitutes 21 to 24 classroom training hours. Participants may attend any of the in-depth courses once they have completed the Introduction & Overview course.

Our Partnership with TCU

Raise the Future is uniquely recognized as one of a select few TBRI® Ambassador Organizations of the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at Texas Christian University (TCU). TBRI® Ambassador Organizations are identified as key partners who have long-term relationships with the Purvis Institute and are furthering its mission at a systemic level using TBRI®. Several Raise the Future staff members serve as mentors for new TBRI® Practitioners and participate as experts on multiple KPICD projects. KPICD regularly refers other organizations internationally and across the U.S. to Raise the Future for support and advisement regarding TBRI® implementation.

FAQ

  • I'm still not sure I understand what TBRI® is.

We know of some resources that might help. TCU has released a short video about TBRI®, available in English:

    and Spanish:

Additionally, you may be interested in the books from the KPICD, "The Connected Child" by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross, which can be found here.

  • How do I access this program?

Anyone who is interested in our In-Home Coaching, Professional Consultation, or Implementation & Connection Groups must have attended the TBRI® Introduction & Overview first.

If you are interested in knowing more about any of these things, reach out to your local TBRI® Practitioner.

  • What happens during In-Home Coaching?

Once a family has completed the Introduction & Overview training and is interested in Coaching, we start with an initial phone call to gather some information. Then we set up a time to visit, virtually or in person, to talk about your family's needs and observe the dynamics in your home. Then we will use the information gathered to plan play-based lessons to teach skills and model these caregiving strategies with your household.

  • What happens during Implementation & Connection Groups?

Families can register for a local or virtual group once they have attended the Introduction & Overview training.

Our Connection Groups follow this sort of format:

    1. Families arrive
    2. We eat dinner as a group, provided by Raise the Future Staff
    3. Children and parents split into two groups
    4. Parents have a TBRI® discussion around support and skill-building
    5. Children engage in games that teach the same lessons the parents are learning
    6. We regroup and say goodbye
    7. Group ends

Unfortunately, this service is not yet available in Utah. Please contact your local Practitioner if you have any further questions about how this may apply to you.

  • What is Professional Consultation and how do I use it?

Any professional who touches the life of a child from a hard place can benefit from our program. We consult with professionals on implementing TBRI® strategies into their work environment in order to best support the children they serve. We also offer monthly virtual professional consultation for those who are looking for less intensive support.

  • My child's school needs this! Why don't you teach it to them?

If you know of someone in your child's life who might be interested in or benefit from TBRI®, please share our information with them. We would love to support anyone who needs more information on addressing challenging behaviors.

  • What if my child doesn't have trauma? Is this still useful?

We believe that TBRI® is an effective model for all human relationships, regardless of a person's trauma history. Because TBRI® is founded on the development and attachment relationships of all humans, TBRI® is suited for all people with all types of histories. If you are uncertain about whether TBRI® could benefit you, reach out to your local Practitioner. They will be happy to help you understand what TBRI® could do for you.

  • What kinds of families can use your services? How do I know if I'm eligible?

We serve post-permanency families. We define post-permanency as a closed case with their agency or county and may look like the following:

    • Biological families whose children were removed and have been returned, and there is no longer an open child welfare case
    • Guardianship and/or kinship families who no longer have an open child welfare case
    • Adoptive families with at least one finalized adoption in their home
    • Professionals who serve these families

If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact your local Practitioner.

  • The services you provide don't meet all my needs. What do I do?

While we have many opportunities to meet your needs within our program, we know we can't do everything.

At Raise the Future, we have resource information available for each state and a staff who can help connect you with resources and services that meet your needs.
