Steps to Hosting

1. Introduction

2. TRAINING

  • Program & Advocacy Training

This 2-hour training covers program protocols, roles and responsibilities, and provides tools and resources for interacting with youth.

  • Host Training

This 12-hour training is hosted over the course of two days and provides information about youth in foster care, how they are affected by past trauma, and how you can connect with and support them.

  • Online Trainings

Complete two webinars through CWTS, Colorado's Child Welfare Training System.

  • CPR/FIRST AID

CPR/First Aid can be completed through any organization of your choosing. Once completed you will provide a copy of your certificate to CHOICE staff.

3. Approval

  • OBTAIN DRIVING APPROVAL

Fill out a Vehicle Agreement Form and provide driver’s license and proof of insurance. You will also submit background checks through an online platform.

  • FBI FINGERPRINTS

All volunteers engaging with our youth must be fingerprinted. If you have been fingerprinted within the last year you may be able to provide those results.

  • COMPLETE THE HOME SAFETY CHECK & ASSESSMENT

CHOICE staff will complete a home assessment interview and physical environmental checklist with you in your home. This allows our staff and the youth's caseworker to get to know you better and to ensure your home is a safe place.

4. MATCH WITH A YOUTH

  • MAKE A CONNECTION

Youth and adults will meet each other at CHOICE events. If there is a mutual connection between your family and a youth, you will have the opportunity to explore a hosting relationship.

  • INTRODUCTORY MEETING

Once you have been fully approved and have spent at least three events with a youth, you will meet with CHOICE staff and the youth’s team to discuss the relationship moving forward.

  • YOU ARE MATCHED!

You and the youth you have been matched with may start spending time together in the community and in your home. Hosts are required to see the youth they are matched with twice per month for a minimum of one year.
